What is Hawaii DMV Now?

Hawaii DMV Now is a self-service DMV kiosk that offers a fast and easy way to renew your vehicle registration. Simply scan the barcode on your renewal postcard or type your license plate number on the touch-screen. The ATM-like machine will accept your payment and print your registration and license plate emblem on the spot!

What do I need to bring with me to renew at a kiosk?

You'll need your renewal notice to scan, or you'll need to enter your license plate number and select your county and vehicle type. You'll also need a credit or debit card to pay.

Who can use the kiosks?

You may use any DMV Now kiosk in the county where your vehicle is registered.

When can I renew at a kiosk?

You can renew at a kiosk any time after receiving your renewal notice (approximately 45 days prior to your expiration date). Late fees will be assessed if you renew after your expiration date, but you can still renew at the kiosk up to 10 months after your expiration date.

Will I pay a fee to use the kiosk?

Along with your renewal cost and any late fees (if applicable), the following fees also apply depending on where the kiosk is located:

  • City and County of Honolulu: $4 per renewed vehicle + 2.5% credit card fee
  • Hawaii County: $4 per renewed vehicle + 2.5% credit card fee
  • Kauai County: $4 per renewed vehicle + 2.5% credit card fee
  • Maui County: No fee per renewed vehicle + 2.3% credit card fee at DMV locations or 2.5% fee at non-DMV locations

How can I pay?

Credit and debit cards are accepted at all locations. The kiosk inside the Kahului DMV is the only one that accepts cash.

What types of vehicles can be renewed at a kiosk?

You can renew the following vehicle types at a kiosk:

  • Car
  • Truck
  • Moped
  • Trailer
  • Motorcycle/Auto Cycle
You may not use a kiosk to renew any vehicles that are classified as heavy vehicles.

What if I need a safety inspection?

If your renewal notice indicates that a safety inspection is required, you will not be able to renew at a kiosk. Once you have successfully passed the inspection, you can renew at the kiosk immediately.

What if I have outstanding traffic violations?

If your renewal notice indicates that you have outstanding traffic violations, you will not be able to renew at a kiosk.

What if the address on my renewal notice is wrong?

If the address listed on your renewal notice is wrong, you will not be able to renew at a kiosk.

Can the kiosk do other transactions?

No, the kiosk will only process a vehicle registration renewal. It cannot issue replacement emblems or change the name or address on your motor vehicle registration. Please visit your local Motor Vehicle office for this service.

How does the kiosk work?

Simply scan the barcode on your vehicle registration renewal postcard or use the touch-screen to type in your license plate number and choose your vehicle type.

Follow the instructions to review your vehicle record, and pay fees. The kiosk will print your receipt, registration and emblem on the spot. Just grab your documents and go!

If you renew at a DMV Now kiosk, your registration card and license plate emblem will print out immediately.
